Conserving electricity serves tons of purposes. Most prominent of which are helping reduce global warming and saving a lot of money. Saving electricity doesn’t mean that you should stop using it, but the best way to save electricity is to get smart with how to use it.

These are the smartest ways to help you save electricity and become a part of an environmentally friendly world.


Turn off all the unnecessary light bulbs in your house and during the daytime embrace natural light. Open the curtains and let the natural light come into your house. It will not only save electricity but also create a healthy and happy environment. 


Switch to LED light bulbs. An LED light bulb consumes only 30% energy that an average incandescent light bulb at your home uses, and it gives you the same lighting.  If you switch to LED lights completely that means you’re saving 70% electricity just on lights than before.


It is the most common and the simplest way of saving electricity and it works wonders. Turn off all the switches when you’re leaving the house or when not using them. If it’s a light switch or an electronic device on standby it is using electricity momentarily, turn it off when not needed. And unplug any appliances that aren’t needed.


Since we’re dealing with a rapidly fast developing world of technology where there are new machines being introduced every other day. There’s a very high chance that the home appliances you’re using have better energy saving models. For example, Inverter Air Conditioners save you a larger amount of energy consuming than a regular AC.

You have to be smart about the devices you use in your house. Regularly service them and make sure they run smoothly and efficiently.  If you have an older refrigerator, electric stove and oven, dishwasher, washer and dryer, or other large appliance, look into getting it replaced.

Make sure you reduce your reliance on these appliances also. Like in the old days people didn’t need large appliances to run their households; experiment with ways to use only what you really need.


Invest in renewable energy like solar panels, windmills they are expensive but if you can afford it this is the way to go. It’ll save you money over time as well as maintain an eco-friendly environment.


Use insulation in your house, make sure there are good seals in your windows and doors etc. so that in the winter warm heated air doesn’t leak, same in the summer for cool air.

 Instead of using electric heating in winter to warm yourself, wear warm clothes. Or use gas heaters or burn coals, this way you can save a lot of electricity and money too. Use less hot water, take shorter showers. Heating water takes a lot of energy, be smart with how much water you use.

In summertime keep your AC temperature to above 24C degrees it saves energy. Also try to use Air Conditioning as least frequently as possible.


Washing machine dryers can consume huge amounts of electricity. If it’s a nice day, dry your washing outside or leave it to air indoors. Try to save as much energy as you can.


A microwave is nearly 4 times as energy efficient as an oven. Try to use the oven when only it’s necessary and nowadays all of your food heating or even baking can be done using a microwave. An Oven consumes a lot of energy to heat up. Every time you open your oven door, the internal temperature can drop 25 degrees. Then, your oven has to use more electricity to bring the temperature back up. To save electricity, peek through the window and rely on your oven’s light instead of opening the door.


Instead of using vaccum cleaners, dishwashers, washing machines use your hands and do that work by yourself, it’ll help you exercise and as well as save a lot of money. As these machines use a vast amount of energy to operate.



Your fridge runs 24 hours a day and is one of your most expensive appliances to run. The ideal fridge temperature is 4 or 5 degrees Celsius. Your ideal freezer temperature is minus 15 to minus 18 degrees.

Make sure the fridge door seal is tight and that no gaps or cracks let cold air escape. If you have a second fridge or freezer, only turn it on when you need it.


Put frozen food in your fridge in the morning to thaw out and reduce cooking time in the evening. When you’re cooking, use the microwave when you can. Microwaves use much less energy than an electric oven.

If you use a stove, keep lids on pots to reduce cooking time. Plan to cook more and have leftover meals for the next day or the whole week. Keep leftover meals in the freezer.


Use the economy cycle on your dishwasher, and only run it when it’s full.

And last but not least To reduce energy consumption in your home, you do not necessarily need to go out and purchase energy efficient products. Energy conservation can be as simple as turning off lights or appliances when you do not need them.
